While it is true that Workplace Politics are at play in every organization, it does not necessarily mean that there is discrimination in the workplace. Not all politics are bad and understanding how the interconnections between a team of people can lead to success for each team member as well as the company. Â
In essence workplace politics is the power and authority processes and behaviors that are at work in a particular workplace. It is how the links between people in the workplace work which can be decidedly positive, rather than the commonly perceived discrimination workplace. Â
The senior leaders set up a formal hierarchy which defines the reporting structure. These organizational structures are typically based on the vision, goals resources and personnel available within the organization. This sets up the initial political power structure of the organization. However, as each new person is removed or added this power structure changes and must be adjusted to. This is sometimes referred to as Positional Power.Â
An informal hierarchy starts to build almost as soon as the formal structure is set up. Its currency is information! The more a person has access to information, and the more valuable that information, the higher that person is in the informal hierarchy. This information can also include gossip – the person who knows all the good gossip holds power! This is sometimes referred to as Personal Power.Â
Both formal and informal hierarchies exist in all companies and as long as each person is working for the good of the company, upholding its values, goals and objectives they both lead to the success of the company and not to discrimination in the workplace.  Poor workplace politics hurts the company. Resources that should be used to make the company succeed are being used by individuals for personal gain and have a negative effect on the organization’s bottom line!Â
Self-awareness is about understanding your own traits, behaviors, needs, desires, feelings, failings, habits, and everything else that influences who you are. This is a long list but the more you know about each of these the better you are able to adapt to the situation around you. You will never totally understand everything that makes you who you are but each day you can become a little more enlightened. Self-awareness will help you to make choices that are right for you and will allow you to form successful relationships and make better decisions.Â
